My favorite route (about 30 mins longer) is to take I-10 to Indio, CA, stopping at Shield's Date Farm for a bite to eat (and a date shake). From there, take 111 into Palm Desert. Make a left on 74, riding through Pinon Pines. Make a left on 371 traveling through Anza. Once you get to Aguanga, make a right onto 79, and travel to Temecula. At Temecula, go south on 15 and take the exit for Oceanside, Rd. 76. Once you get to Oceanside, 76 will bear left and turn into S. Coast Hwy. Take that road all the way south as you'll hit Carlsbad, Encinitas, Del Mar and other really nice beach towns. Once you get to the Torrey Pines area, you can either bear right and go through La Jolla (La Jolla Cove is a must see if you haven't already) or take Genessee Ave. and get on the 5 which takes you into San Diego.

Check out Los Algodones Mexico. It is only about a mile or so from I8 just past Yuma. It's a medical tourism mecca, but also has the usual street vendors, street food and some strong margaritas at the El Pariaso in the middle of town. You can pick up some cheap liquor too. The snowbirds should be gone for the most part so crossing back will not be a problem. There is tons of parking right at the border ($6). You may decide to go back for dental work! It's what I do.

It is on the US side. Just before you cross into Mexico on the right. It is a huge, fenced, paved parking area run by the native American community on the border there. It is just a few steps from the lot to the pedestrian border crossing turnstile. Going in you just walk through the gate/turnstile. No one asks for a passport or anything. Coming back you follow the walkways into a US border patrol area where they scan your passport, maybe ask a question or two. The customs office is across the street from the parking lot. It doesn't get much easier. You won't be alone. Even in the off season there are dozens and dozens of people going there for dental work each day.

Thanks everyone for their advice. We went to San Diego via Gila Bend and the I 8. A very boring drive, with little scenery of note. But on the way back, we did the route from Oceanside to Indio, then the I 10. The roads through the countryside were beautiful, winding through the hills in California. The I 10 portion is mind-numbing though. I've driven across the prairies in Canada, and the I 10 reminds me of that feeling of "are we ever getting to the end of this road", especially with the relentless truck traffic and constant winds.

We went to San Diego this past weekend (just our luck, the weather was absolutely awful! Cold, cloudy, some rain) and I didn't find the drive to be bad at all. I always enjoy roadtrips that take you places where you can see the landscape change from desert to mountains to lush coastal green.

On google maps, it states the distance from Phoenix to San Diego is 355 mles away on I-8W, it states the approximate driving time by car is 5 hours and 25 minutes. This is assuming you are going the speed limit. If drive 10 miles over the speed limit like most people, you will make it to San Diego in under 5 hours. If you are being a speed demon, it's closer to 4 hours. And if you live in the south valley (Chandler), it's even closer. I just got back from San Diego and remember reading how insane responses about the drive times. Distance from Phoenix to San Diego
